An Art Series by Isaiah Weatherspoon
Still & Wild is a series of paired animal portraits exploring what it means to navigate assimilation and authenticity in America, as a Black or brown person, or as anyone who has never fit the mold.
Each animal appears twice. In the Still portrait, it is muted and blended into its background, the visual language of quieting yourself to survive in spaces not built for you. In the Wild portrait, the same animal returns rendered in grayscale against a bold, saturated background. Not chaos. Clarity. Not rage. Truth.
Animals are used deliberately. They allow the viewer to sit with themes of race, pressure, and identity without immediately defaulting to assumptions about people.
The question underneath every piece is simple:
What version of ourselves survives, and what version of ourselves lives?
